ABSTRACT

A review on the principal messianic figures of Second Temple Judaism is carried out. The Servant of Yahweh messianism receives special attention, following Isaiah’s text that gave birth to this tradition as well as later revisions, including the first Christians’ view of the suffering messiah. Three interpretations about the meaning and functionality of the suffering just are offered. One focused on communication theory, another on Rene Girard’s interpretation of Gospel texts. Finally the author offers his personal view, resulting from a combination of the two precedents.
